Huh?

Currently
In a Sunburned Country
By Bill Bryson

Is it just me or is Sarah Palin's resignation speech a train wreck of mixed metaphors and incoherence? Is she speaking in code? Maybe she's been recruited by the CIA and this is her first assignment--she could be the agency's undercover mass communications person who sends directives to all the field agents via coded speeches. Or maybe she's sending subliminal messages to all our brains. Maybe if we played her speech backwards we'd hear, "Buy duct tape and plastic. Buy duct tape and plastic."

That must be it. She has no problem finding her way into the media spotlight. Both her political friends and foes are sure to pay attention--if not out of devotion, then out of derision.

Smart move, CIA. (How lucky for 3M and the Association of Plastic Manufacturers!)

But wait--here's another, far more disturbing idea--she is 90% of my students, all grown up. Incapable of sustained intellectual engagement and proud of it, confusing style with substance and stringing together cliches like random, shiny baubles.

Maybe I should ease up on my critiques of their carelessly flung together compositions. Maybe it's not just a typical condition of immaturity. Maybe they're merely following in the steps of their elected officials.

Yeah, I was curious but I could only sit through a few minutes of it on tv last night. I don't know about you but I'm heading out to get some duct tape and plastic!

Maybe she needs a teleprompter.

This is pathetic ok? Maybe if we got together and bought her a
TelePrompTer and a bottle of tyranny she'd be more likable to you?
Obama has the benefit of what must be a pocket size prompter
because it's everywhere he goes, and he still thanks himself for
things such as hosting st. Patricks day parties and says we have 57
states but then again he is the messiah to our country and deserves
a certain amount of benefit of the doubt doesn't he?

Well, I'm not sure I follow you, Jeff, but I suppose a teleprompter might help--as well as a speechwriter and an education. In the clip above, her ideology isn't even clear enough to critique. Now if we were talking about conservatives like David Brooks, Pat Buchanan, or Mike Huckabee I might be disagreeing with their ideology, but I would not be criticizing their ability to engage with the issues in an intelligent way. It's too bad the Republican party has gone so long without credible leadership, the constituents don't even miss it anymore.

I'll tell you what the American people miss. We miss a real leader
who is able to speak passionately about the issues (agree or
disagree) from the heart instead of blindly reading off a screen (to the
point of looking like a fool when the TelePrompTer has the wrong speech
in etc..) what some writer who is well in touch with what the polls say and
what the current buzzwords are ('climate change' instead of 'global warming etc...)

Real leadership doesn't need someone to design well crafted words
enabling one's self to give a 30 minute speech without ever really
revealing what it is you believe or what action should be taken.

Today's political system is so full of hollow bullcrap it's refreshing
when we see someone step to the podium and say exactly what he
or she is feeling or thinking, without needing to consult advisors and
pollsters on the exact form of each and every word, so as to retain
the support of anyone and everyone ignorant enough to not see through
the facade.

As for republican leadership it is sadly lacking, as is the democratic party.
Frankly I don't claim either party as mine so I don't care. I just want
someone looking to do the best for the country and not obsessed with
money and power.

I'm tired of the left (yes including most republicans) attacking Palin
in the lowest of ways. Letterman, Vanity Fair, MSNBC, yourself, you're all
afraid of genuiness and sincerity in a leader and How thatmight lead
to the demise of the progressive agenda promoted in our country
for so many years.

Pardon my bluntness but that's how it appears to me

Okay, so tell me--what IS she saying? Speaking from the heart (whatever that is) is fine--unless of course you're aspiring to a leadership position. Then you have to be able to speak clearly as well.

You can be damn sure I'd need a teleprompter if I were speaking to the press--it's called knowing your limits. 99% of us don't speak with the kind of grammar or clarity we expect in written communication, so effective public speaking requires adequate preparation--not merely shooting from the hip. Of course, if a person isn't mentally able to process complex issues, shooting from the hip (or speaking passionately) is a good way to cover it up.

It's like the minister who wrote in the margin of his speaking notes: "Weak point: yell like mad!"

Yeah, it's almost impossible to decipher what she's actually saying in that speech. It does kind of painfully remind me of a lot of the students I've had.

I was going to leave a smart intelligent witty response earlier
but my speechwriter was out and the one thing I didn't wanna do
was do what I always do--speak from the heart. It seems every
other time I simply wasn't making sense to actual smart people
so my writer came to the rescue. From now on anything in my name
will actully be his words.

'First I'd like to thank myself for being here and for posting this comment
I could've been in any one of the rest of our great 57 states but I chose
to be here tonight.'

oh wait I don't think this is helping. I guess I share writers and/or
teleprompters with President Obama (he's said those exact things)and it's not working out. I may
go back to speaking from the heart (whatever that means)what I actually think.

There's a time and a place for teleprompters or your tool of choice
but to use it as a 24/7 crutch is a bit ridiculous.
Just trying to prove a point:)

Have you tried running the video backwards? Maybe that would make sense.

So many of my friends seem worked up into a lather and obsessed with Palin. My opinion, and I may yet be proven wrong, is that she's a one-hit wonder. Yes, like Right Said Fred or Dexy's Midnight Runners. She can really only carry a storyline so far, and while she may energize hardcore conservatives, last time I checked they didn't represent a plurality of the electorate.

I agree that the whole thing was quite bizarre, but I bet something will come out in the next year or so, at which point all the pundits will say, I knew it! Who knows, to the 'insiders' it made perfect sense...

Sadly, Palin is like 90% of your students, as was Bush. Which is why they get elected.
